EXERCISE

I would like you to take a piece of paper and a pen.  We’re going to explore a little bit about where you are spending your energy right now.

  1. I would like you to write down, what are some areas in your life that you are spending a lot of your energy.  It could be you’re spending X number of your time and energy in your career, maybe only 10% with your family, maybe 2% with yourself.  I’m not sure but just have a look. Have a look at where are you spending your energy.
  2. I want you to look at where are those areas that you’re spending your energy on and are they costing you more than what you’re getting?
Just have a look.  Are there any areas that you’re spending a lot of your energy on and it’s actually costing more?
  3. I want you to take some time and write down for the next year.  Where do you want to focus your energy on?
Like this year, I intentionally look at where I want to focus more of my energy on.  One of the things that I’ve decided is more time with my kids and family, and also myself.  Write down for yourself for the next year.  Where do you want to focus your energy on specifically in relationships, in your business, in your career, your relationship with your friends, religion, your spouse, yourself, or if you have kids you know, your kids, and any other significant others?  Explore and if there’s anything else that come to your mind, write them down.
  4. I want you to go into even more detail about the areas that you want to focus on.
Then you can create success for yourself.  Let’s take the aspect of a business, for example, I want you to look into your business.  Where do you want to spend more energy, maybe spend more energy on marketing? Spend more energy on networking?  Spend more energy in sales or maybe online advertisement?Be clear. It is really important to take this time too to see where else, let’s say in your business that you have been spending energy unnecessarily.  It’s wasting your energy.I’ll give you an example. I remember my husband, he loves to do design work, and he will spend a lot of time perfecting a design, this is graphic design.  He doesn’t realize sometimes it takes him three to five hours perfecting a design that doesn’t add a lot of value to his work.  He could have used the three hours, perhaps half an hour just to do the design and it looks pretty good and take the remaining two, two and a half hours to do something more productive.  More specifically, look into your business, what are some money-making, generating activities are you focusing on?  I would encourage you to also take time to look at where else you want to focus and where else you want to take some energy away so that you’re not wasting your energy and look into other areas of your life.
